God

Is God There

Every argument against God is made with tools that only work if he is there.

There is no evidence for God

The Bible says the whole world is God’s work and shows it, down to the mind you are reading with. So the real dispute is over what you will let the evidence prove. If you decided in advance that only matter exists, nothing could count for God.

Ask instead what has to be true for you to argue at all. You expect that a statement cannot be both true and false at the same time and in the same sense, everywhere and always. That law of logic is not made of matter. It is not a habit of your brain either, or it would hold only in your head. Logic governs thought, and thought belongs to minds, so a law of thought that holds everywhere and never changes points to a mind that is everywhere and never changes. If you say logic only describes the world, then why should a world that no mind made be rational all the way through? And why ought you to think by its rules?

Science leans on more than logic. Every experiment assumes that the future will be like the past, and you cannot prove that by experiment without assuming it. David Hume saw that reason alone cannot prove it. The Christian knows why nature keeps its habits. God upholds it through his Son, and he has promised to (Genesis 8:22, Jeremiah 33:25).

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

Colossians 1:17 (KJV)

You may say I trust that promise tomorrow only because it held yesterday. I trust it because of who made it, a God who cannot lie (Titus 1:2). A habit can only tell you what has happened, and a promise from God tells you what will.

Even trusting your mind is borrowed. If there is no God, your thoughts are chemistry in a brain shaped by whatever kept your ancestors alive. Granted, true beliefs about food and danger helped them survive. But no ancestor ever lived or died by being right about God, so on your own terms you have no good reason to trust your mind about him, even when it says there is none. The Christian has one. A God of truth made the mind to know his world.

So each of these tools is borrowed, and your sense of right and wrong is one more, taken up in Who Decides What Is Good. You are standing on God’s floor to argue that there is no floor. The God these tools point to is personal, and he stands above the world he made. He is not a stranger you reason your way up to. You already know him (Romans 1:21), and he has already spoken. Every morning you lean on a promise he made. Can the Bible Be Trusted and Did Jesus Rise show where he has spoken.

Who made God?

Nobody did. Whatever begins to exist has a cause, and God never began (Psalm 90:2). Every view of the world ends at something that simply is, and for the atheist it is matter and energy or the laws of physics. What divides us is whether the eternal thing is a mind, and a mindless thing cannot account for the laws of thought.

Science has replaced God

Science studies how the world normally works, and why there is a world at all is another question. A man who learns how an engine runs has not learned that no one built it. Many of the men who built modern science, Kepler and Boyle and Faraday and Maxwell among them, believed in the God of the Bible. They looked for laws in nature because a wise God had made it.

Faith is believing without evidence

Not in the Bible. When Jesus blessed those who have not seen and yet believe (John 20:29), he was speaking to Thomas, who had refused the word of the disciples who saw him (John 20:25). Believing good witnesses is not believing without evidence. Faith as the Bible means it is trust in someone who has proved trustworthy, and Luke wrote so that his reader could know for certain (Luke 1:1-4). You trust the record that Julius Caesar lived, and you trust your memory, though you can only check it with your memory. What matters is whether your trust rests on something that can hold it. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater, and God has testified of his Son (1 John 5:9).

Under every objection

What God Calls You To Do

An objection can be answered and a man still stay away. Jesus said that men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil (John 3:19). The trouble between you and God is not finally an argument. You have sinned against him, and you know it.

Christ came for sinners exactly like you. He kept the law you have broken, and on the cross he bore its curse for everyone who trusts him, and God raised him from the dead. So the call is the one Jesus preached. Repent, and believe the gospel (Mark 1:15). You do not have to settle every question first.
